Cricket

History was recast on the May Day, 01 May 2013, when our school, Salwan Boys’ Sr Secy School regained its cricketing glory by lifting the Under-16 Coca Cola Cup. This coveted win has come as a result of extensive efforts of Shri Sanjay Bharadwaj – a world class coach, who has over so many years associated closely with the school team. He has nurtured the raw talent that our boys have, and groomed them to become stars and match-winners.coca cola

Winning cricket tournaments for young boys held at the national level has become a habit for our students, as they are encouraged to perform well at the top level by the school administration and afforded all opportunities and facilities. The highs achieved under the stewardship of our former Principal Shri Dabas have now been reclaimed under the guidance of Mrs Saroj Achra, our present Principal.

The young ‘Gambhirs and Nehras to be’ are put through a strict physical regimen under the supervision of our PTI and Athletics Coach Shri Anil Toor in the morning hours, while in the evening they learn the finer aspects of cricketing techniques under watchful eyes of Shri Sanjay Bharadwaj. To top it all, they also attend extra classes to make up for the loss of academics they suffer as a result of their cricketing pursuits.

Last Thursday, on the First of May, our school team took full advantage of playing at home, and got better of CAV Inter College, Uttar Pradesh to lift the prestigious U-16 Coca-Cola Cricket Cup 2013, at the Jamia Milia University Ground. We won the toss and chose to bat first. Even though opener Shivam Chauhan’s early wicket gave CAV a good start, our middle order batsmen showed that they were in no mood to let go of the game. Nitin Tanwar scored a commendable 47, missing his half-century by just 3 runs. Rajesh Tangri scored 40 runs and the duo’s partnership of 79 runs gave our team the foundation they needed to put up a promising total on the board. Thanks to Kaif Ahmed’s blistering 88 in 64 balls with three sixes and four boundaries, we were in a strong position to win the match with 241 runs on the board.

In return, the boys from CAV Inter College started well but lost 3 valuable wickets by the time they touched 91 at the end of 26.3 overs. They lost another 5 wickets by 195 and Prashant Vashisth’s 3-wicket haul restricted the opponents to 221 in 50 overs. Kaif Ahmed’s brilliant 88 won him the deserving Man of the Match award. As Coca-Cola U16 Cricket Cup winners our school team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and the winner’s trophy. Nitin Tanwar was adjudged as Player of the tournament and Kaif Ahmed, the best batsman.

Basket Ball

Salwan Boys School has joined hands with NBA (USA) to initiate a grass roots learning program in our Institute. Now NBA (USA) will train the physical instructors and the children and will provide kitting/diet, a true win situation for our students.  Who Knows, the best may take basket ball coaching in our school in the years ahead...to sustain the sports and themselves too. For sure it will bring discipline too, a classic example of what sports can do beyond sports, build an institution through discipline. A new Basket Ball court was build to sustain this growing enthusiasm. .

Athletics

  • Won Championship at Zonal level.
  • About 200 students from our school attended training camp in athletics organized by Mr. Anil Toor.

The aim of Athletics in our Institution is:

  • To make athletics accessible to the masses.
  • To provide teachers with a creative and practical resource that will help them encourage and motivate youngsters participate and achieve in athletics.
  • To ensure that athletics is taught in a more inclusive and engaging manner, with modern approaches that are less reliant on formal didactic delivery and focus more on learning.
  • To ensure all children receive a positive experience of sports, where the emphasis is on participation, enjoyment, mastery and the acquisition of skills, so that they maintain interest in the sport.
  • To create a greater understanding that running, jumping and throwing underpin the vast majority of sports, and ensure children acquire and develop these skills throughout their education.
  • To reach out and appeal to a much wider audience of young people to ensure we have a sustainable number of 16-17 year olds in the sport, who are committed to competing at senior level.
It is important that our schools support the development of athleticism in youngsters, certainly up to the age of 13-14. Good teaching at the very early stages is crucial, along with appropriate year on year progression. It takes time to develop the fundamental skills and understanding associated with movements underpinning the ability to run, jump and throw.
